Henry Altemus
Company Format:
2 Volumes: 1 - 19
Cloth with a book appropriate multicolored picture that is
the same as the one seen in the Young People's Library of
the same title. The dust jacket matches the book cover.
6.5 x 5.25.
Series Notes:
1. The text of these books is the same as the Young
People's Library. The key difference between the books is
found on the title page which is glossy and says Altemus'
Favorite Series at the top.
2. Format 1 was published between 1900 and 1901.
3. The dates of format 1 books can be determined.
a. 1900- The ads in the back list
the Young People's Library books to Grandfather's Chair.
b. 1900(later)- The ads in the
back for the Young People's Library go to Wonder Book. No
Ellis books are listed and the end papers are plain.
c. 1901- Ellis' Young People's
History Books are listed in the ads.
d. 1901-End papers show a green
colored girl reading with a decorative green border.
There are some books without any ads. At this time these
books cannot be dated.
4. Format 2 books have covers that are the same as Format
2/3 Young People's Library Books (Series #202). They were
published between 1902-1910.
5. The dates and priorities of Format 2 books can be
determined by the ads in the back of the book. Many of the
earlier books of this format have several pages of ads
which precede the main 16 page ad section. These former
ads frequently are for the Young People's History Series
by Edward Ellis, Rataplan and miscellaneous non series
books. It appears that they were randomly inserted by
Altemus over a several year span. They are not helpful in
dating these books and should be ignored for that purpose.
Only the main 16 page ad section can be used for dating
these books.
a. 1902- End papers show reading
girl. Last book on P.16 is Rataplan
b. 1902 (later)- End papers are
plain. Last book on P. 16 is Rataplan
c. 1904 (early)- P. 16 of the ads
lists Banbury Cross Series #1-8, Wee Books are advertised
as two book sets.
d. 1904 (late)- P.16 of the ads
lists Banbury Cross Series #1-8, Wee Books are listed as
individual books not sets of two.
e. 1905- P. 16 of the ads lists
the Banbury Cross Series Volumes #1-10. Page 11 lists
Don't's for Boys at the top of the page
f. 1908- P. 16 of the ads lists
the Banbury Cross Series Volumes #1-10. Page 11 Lists
Mother Stories Series Volumes 1-6
g. 1910- P. 16 of the ads lists 3
Automobile Girl's books
